Objectives: to further Inuit knowledge of environmental change by providing active hunters with
oceanographic and environmental monitoring equipment to quantify the changes they are
observing, linking traditional and western approaches to science.
Methods: Oceanographic deployments for monitoring salinity and ocean currents, satellite imagery and time lapse monitoring of sea ice and wildlife above and below the ice.
Results: Providing hunters with fuel and additional income for monitoring allows them to obtain local healthy country food for their communities, while providing important research and monitoring information to ensure the sustainability of ecosystem resources.
Looking Ahead: This society aims to develop a multi-community network following the path of freshwater along the coasts of Hudson Bay and Labrador.
